TMJ Treatment
TMJ Treatment at Falcon Dental
If you suffer from chronic jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when you chew, frequent headaches, or difficulty opening and closing your mouth, you may be experiencing a Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the complex hinge joint that connects your jawbone to your skull on each side of your face. When this joint and the surrounding muscles become inflamed or stop working correctly, it can lead to significant pain and discomfort.
At Falcon Dental, we specialize in diagnosing and treating TMD. Our goal is to identify the root cause of your discomfort and provide effective, non-invasive solutions to alleviate your pain and restore proper jaw function.
Common Symptoms of TMD
TMJ disorders can present a wide range of symptoms, which can sometimes make diagnosis difficult. You may be suffering from TMD if you experience:
- Pain or tenderness in your jaw, face, neck, or shoulders.
- A clicking, popping, or grating sound when you open or close your mouth.
- Difficulty chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite.
- “Locking” of the jaw, making it difficult to open or close your mouth.
- Frequent headaches or migraines, especially in the morning.
- Earaches or a ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus).
- Facial swelling.
What Causes TMJ Disorders?
The exact cause of TMD is not always clear, but it is often a combination of factors, including:
- Bruxism (Teeth Grinding): Chronic clenching or grinding of the teeth, especially at night, puts immense pressure on the TMJ.
- Stress: High levels of stress often lead to unconscious muscle tensing and teeth clenching.
- Misaligned Bite (Malocclusion): When your teeth do not fit together correctly, it can strain the jaw muscles and joints.
- Trauma or Injury: A direct blow to the jaw, chin, or side of the head can damage the joint.
- Arthritis: Degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis can affect the TMJ.
How We Diagnose and Treat TMD
Our approach begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your jaw’s movement, a review of your symptoms, and a check for any signs of grinding or a misaligned bite. We may also use digital X-rays or 3D (CBCT) imaging to get a clear view of the joint itself.
Our treatment plans are conservative and focus on relieving pain and restoring function:
Custom Oral Appliances (Splints or Night Guards)
This is the most common and effective treatment for TMD. We create a custom-fitted, clear acrylic appliance that you wear over your teeth (usually at night). This splint does two critical things:
- It prevents you from clenching and grinding, protecting your teeth and joint from further damage.
- It gently guides your jaw into a more relaxed and stable position, allowing the inflamed muscles and joint to heal.
Bite Adjustments (Occlusal Equilibration)
In some cases, we may recommend minor, precise adjustments to the biting surfaces of your teeth. This helps to rebalance your bite, ensuring your teeth meet together evenly and reducing the strain on your TMJ.
Lifestyle Recommendations
We will also provide practical advice to help manage your symptoms, such as stress reduction techniques, exercises to stretch the jaw muscles, and a temporary soft-food diet to allow the joint to rest.
