Dental Sealants
Dental Sealants at Falcon Dental
One of the most effective, safe, and simple ways to prevent cavities in children and teenagers is with Dental Sealants. This proactive and painless treatment provides a powerful, invisible shield of protection for your teeth, stopping decay before it ever has a chance to start.
A sealant is a thin, durable, tooth-colored or clear coating that is “painted” onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). It is a non-invasive procedure that provides years of protection with a single application.
Why are Sealants Needed?
If you look at your back teeth, you will notice they have deep grooves, pits, and fissures. These areas are used for chewing, but they are also a perfect trap for food particles and cavity-causing bacteria. Even with the most thorough brushing, toothbrush bristles cannot reach the bottom of these tiny grooves to clean them out.
This trapped plaque and bacteria create acid, which attacks the tooth enamel and quickly leads to cavities. Dental sealants solve this problem by “sealing out” the germs and food.
How Do Sealants Work?
Think of a sealant as a protective “raincoat” for the tooth. The liquid sealant material flows into and fills the deep pits and fissures. It is then hardened instantly with a special curing light. This process creates a smooth, durable, and easy-to-clean surface, effectively blocking bacteria and plaque from getting into the grooves.
Who Should Get Sealants?
- Children & Teenagers (Most Common): We strongly recommend applying sealants to your child’s permanent molars as soon as they erupt (come in). This includes the “6-year molars” (first permanent molars) and the “12-year molars” (second permanent molars).
- Adults: Any adult who has deep grooves in their molars and has not yet developed cavities in those teeth can also benefit from sealants.
- Baby Teeth: In some cases, if a child’s baby molars have particularly deep fissures and they are at high risk for decay, sealants may be recommended to protect them.
What is the Procedure Like?
Applying sealants is one of the easiest and fastest dental procedures. It is completely painless and requires no drilling or anesthesia. The process takes only a few minutes per tooth:
- Clean the Tooth: The tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried.
- Prepare the Tooth: A gentle, safe solution (an “etch”) is applied to the tooth surface to help the sealant bond effectively.
- Rinse & Dry: The tooth is rinsed and dried again.
- Apply the Sealant: The liquid sealant material is carefully “painted” onto the tooth’s chewing surface, flowing into all the pits and grooves.
- Harden (Cure): A special blue curing light is shined on the tooth, hardening the sealant in just a few seconds.
That’s it! Your tooth is now protected, and you can eat and drink normally right away.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Dental sealants are very durable and can protect teeth for many years (often 5 to 10 years). At your regular six-month check-ups, we will examine the sealants to ensure they are fully intact. If a sealant shows signs of wear, it can be easily repaired or reapplied to keep the protection strong.
