Inlays & Onlays
Inlays & Onlays at Falcon Dental
When a tooth has been damaged by decay or fracture beyond what a simple filling can repair, but isn’t severe enough to require a full dental crown, Inlays and Onlays offer an excellent, conservative, and highly durable solution. Often referred to as “partial crowns,” these restorations are custom-made in a dental laboratory to perfectly fit and restore the damaged portion of your tooth.
Inlays and Onlays are designed to be a stronger, longer-lasting alternative to large fillings, providing superior protection and a more precise fit. They help preserve more of your natural tooth structure compared to a traditional crown, which covers the entire tooth.
What’s the Difference Between Inlays and Onlays?
- Inlays: An inlay fits within the cusps (the raised bumps) on the chewing surface of your tooth. It is used when the damage or decay is contained within these cusps.
- Onlays: An onlay is a more extensive restoration. It covers one or more of the cusps and extends over the chewing surface of the tooth. Onlays are used when the damage is more significant, covering the biting surface and sometimes extending down the side of the tooth.
When Are Inlays & Onlays Recommended?
Inlays and Onlays are ideal for:
- Large Cavities: When a cavity is too large for a standard composite filling but doesn’t warrant a full crown.
- Cracked or Fractured Teeth: To restore strength to teeth with cracks that are not severe enough to compromise the entire tooth.
- Replacing Old, Large Fillings: Particularly effective for replacing old metal (amalgam) fillings that have started to break down, leak, or cause cracks in the tooth structure.
- Preserving Tooth Structure: When preserving as much natural tooth as possible is a priority.
Key Benefits of Inlays & Onlays
- Strength & Durability: Crafted from high-quality materials like porcelain, composite resin, or sometimes gold, they are incredibly strong and resistant to fracture, providing a long-lasting restoration.
- Preserves Natural Tooth: They are a conservative option that allows us to keep more of your healthy tooth structure intact compared to a full crown.
- Precise Fit: Because they are custom-made in a lab from precise impressions, they offer an exact fit that is superior to a direct filling, reducing the risk of bacterial leakage.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Porcelain and composite inlays/onlays can be perfectly matched to your natural tooth color, making them virtually invisible.
- Protects the Tooth: They strengthen the weakened tooth structure, helping to prevent future fractures and the need for more extensive treatment.
The Inlay/Onlay Procedure
The process for placing an inlay or onlay typically requires two dental visits:
- First Visit: Preparation:
- The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia.
- Any decay or old filling material is removed.
- The tooth is meticulously cleaned and shaped to receive the inlay or onlay.
- A highly accurate digital scan or impression of the prepared tooth is taken. This impression is sent to a specialized dental lab where your custom restoration will be fabricated.
- A temporary filling or restoration is placed to protect your tooth while your custom inlay/onlay is being made.
- Second Visit: Placement:
- The temporary restoration is removed, and your custom-made inlay or onlay is carefully placed onto the tooth to check its fit and appearance.
- Once confirmed for perfect fit and aesthetics, the inlay or onlay is permanently bonded to your tooth using a strong dental adhesive.
- We then ensure your bite is comfortable and polish the restoration to a smooth finish.
